‘2nd Chance’ Director Ramin Bahrani Explains Richard Davis, Inventor of the Modern Bulletproof Vest

When Ramin Bahrani was first asked to work on a film about Richard Davis, the eccentric inventor of the first concealable bulletproof vest, who is the subject of Bahrani’s doc, “2nd Chance,” it was initially pitched as a narrative film. After hearing more about Davis’ unbelievable story — he demonstrated the vest’s effectiveness by shooting himself 193 times — he decided he was more interested in tackling the story as a work of nonfiction. But, as he told senior film writer Matt Donnelly at the Variety Virtual Sundance Studio presented by Audible, there is someone he had in mind for a fictionalized version of the film.
