“Emilia Pérez” had critics blown away and earned 13 Academy Awards nominations — more than any film this year — but the Oscar campaign is now happening without star Karla Sofía Gascón. In less than a month, she could have become the first openly trans Best Actress winner, but now that hype train has completely gone off the rails as she is engulfed by a social media scandal over her past, some call, racist and Islamaphobic tweets. Speaking in Spanish on CNN, Karla defended herself, insisting, “I am neither racist nor anything that all these people have tried to make others believe I am.”
