The Gone Girl actor remarked, "I don’t know her, but I do know that the cycle of having people harangue and yell at you..kind of seemed like that itself [could have caused Spears’ mental health to decline]." Additionally, Affleck expressed his self-consciousness about his private life being exposed, saying, "I don’t really want people..to be like, ‘that’s not him’..It gets in the way of you being able to create the illusion."
